March 6th, 2008, is identified as the first World Glaucoma Day (WGD) by World Glaucoma Association on the World Glaucoma Conference which was hold in Singapore on July 2007.
Glaucoma is the No.2 disease in the world after cataract which causes blindness. The symptoms are non-specific in early glaucoma, and patients are usually lack of knowledge of Glaucoma. Therefore, more that 50% patients don't realize that they have got glaucoma. And because of these reasons, a large number of them haven't gone to the hospital in time. This causes irreversible visual nerve damage.
As the world-wide public education program - ALL EYES ON GLAUCOMA for WGD, is to remind the public of the high-risk factors of the disease. So they can receive diagnosis and therapy earlier enough. It is hoped that the public will know better about glaucoma so that they can go to the hospital earlier to have an eye examination. On March 6th, Pfizer China held a program supporting three hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou respectively, where the patients who suffer from glaucoma received free diagnosis and consultation with the support of Pfizer China. Experts replied on all kinds of questions about glaucoma, and the patients got to know much more about the disease. Some of the high-risk potential people were identified to have glaucoma via the free examination. Pfizer China will continuously to support such kind of programs in the future, to improve the life quality for the people suffered from glaucoma.
