Pfizer has been operating in China since the early 1980's. Since then we have consistently committed ourselves to both improving the health of the Chinese people and contributing to China's overall prosperity. Pfizer has built on this legacy of dedication to the Chinese healthcare system by introducing innovative and relevant medicines, investing in doctors and patient educational programs targeting disease management and community healthcare awareness, and driving community involvement in these healthcare initiatives. Furthermore, Pfizer contributes to China's scientific and medical talent by including China in our global R&D efforts, as well as functioning as a responsible, and indeed pro-actively philanthropic, corporate citizen.

The first Pfizer plant opened in Dalian in 1989, and significantly, this was the first pharmaceutical plant in China to receive GMP certification. Our increasing integration of China into Pfizer's global operations led to the establishment in 1997 of a management center in Beijing, and the opening of our China Regional Headquarters in 2004. This move marked the establishment of the Pfizer Investment Corporation in Shanghai.

In recognition of the pool of highly-skilled and talented scientists in China, Pfizer established its China Research and Development Center in Shanghai in 2005. The center is staffed with nearly 200 Pfizer colleagues that support various aspects of Pfizer's global R&D efforts.

Pfizer's business presence in China has spread through over 160 cities nationwide with a total staff of 2,500. Pfizer has four state-of-the-art plants in Dalian, Suzhou, and Wuxi. With an accumulated investment of more than USD$500 million, we are one of the largest multinational pharmaceutical enterprises in China today.

Pfizer, through an unparalleled product portfolio, maintains worldwide category leadership across the therapeutic areas and disciplines including cardiovascular health, endocrinology, neuroscience, infectious diseases, urology, ophthalmology, oncology, and inflammatory diseases including arthritis. We constantly add to our healthcare solution offerings by researching, manufacturing, and introducing medicines at the cutting edge of pharmaceutical technology. We work hard to ensure our China operations are in synch with our global product portfolio release schedule to ensure consumers here can benefit from our medicines as soon as they become available. Pfizer has launched over 40 products in China, eight of which can be considered leaders in their respective categories: Lipitor, Norvasc, Celebrex, Viagra, Diflucan, Zithromax, Genotropin and Zoloft, all of which presently enjoy an annual sales volume in excess of USD$1 billion. We aim to introduce 13 new products into the China market before 2013.

At Pfizer, we work hard to contribute in a significant way to the communities around the world in which we operate. In China we work with the close support, counsel and guidance of the Chinese government. Our work here centers on supporting medical agencies, doctors and communities to implement education programs addressing diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hypertension, arthritis, and various mental health conditions.

We partner with other organizations to maximize our positive impact. In particular we have worked with Project HOPE, Family Health International, the American Cancer Society, the Asia Foundation, and the Chinese Foundation for Lifeline Express. We also maintain a close relationship and ongoing cooperation with the China Red Cross and the China Charity Federation.

Some specific programs we have partnered with include HIV/AIDS awareness programs, hospital management training courses, nurse training courses, pilot rural cooperative healthcare system, women's healthcare awareness courses, rural ophthalmologist training, and free-of-charge operations for cataract patients in remote areas. The Pfizer Global Health Fellows program allows Pfizer employees to gift their time and expertise to NGOs to help fight HIV/AIDS, and this program now extends to China.
