November 17, 2009, Shanghai, China: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced yesterday that Pfizer will be a sponsor of the USA National Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, and expressed her appreciation for Pfizer's support. With the Shanghai Expo anticipated to attract over 70 million visitors from around the globe, and the US Pavilion being one of the key country exhibits, Pfizer views its involvement with the Expo as an exceptional platform to share its efforts in developing innovative healthcare solutions to achieve a healthier China and a healthier world. Under the sponsorship agreement, Pfizer will work with Expo organizers to promote and advance the key role that healthcare innovation will have for a healthier future. Dr Steve Yang, Vice President for Research and Development in Asia, who represented Pfizer at the announcement on the grounds of the future USA Pavilion, said: ¡°The Shanghai Expo's theme of Better City, Better Life is well aligned with Pfizer's mission: the application of science and our global resources to improve health and well-being at every stage of life." "We were also compelled by the overall Shanghai Expo theme of 'innovations of science and technology in the city," said Dr. Yang. "This, too, is consistent with Pfizer's R&D activities within China, which based in Shanghai, support Pfizer's global efforts to research and develop new medicines for the benefit of patients around the world.¡± Through the sponsorship agreement, Pfizer will also work with US Pavilion organizers to promote the Expo venue as smoke free. Pfizer China has had a long-term effort globally to help promote "smoke-free" public environments. "With so many visitors expected from all over the world, we want to commend the US Pavilion for its commitment to a healthier city by making the Expo smoke-free. We are pleased to be a sponsor of this and believe that the smoke-free environment will make the experience of all those visiting the US Pavilion and the Expo more enjoyable," said Dr. Yang. Frank Lavin, Chairman of the Steering Committee of the USA National Pavillion, said: "We welcome and appreciate Pfizer's support of the USA National Pavilion, and look forward to showcasing the innovative healthcare technologies of leading U.S. companies such as Pfizer as a means of highlighting America's and American companies' contributions to 'Better Cities and Better Lives' around the globe."
